Hamilton

Basic Info About Project:

Our clients in Hamilton MA wanted to expand their indoor entertainment space out. Their 4-season porch and adjoining open deck did not provide them with the area they desired. Their existing deck needed to be bigger to put a table on or really provide any functionality. The railings also made the space feel even smaller and confined. They desired a patio and fire pit space and enlisted our help to find a solution.

We came up with a solution by marrying the two spaces. The deck space provided not only transitional space from the new patio to the 4-season porch but also an area for outdoor grilling. We also removed the railing which opened the space up and made it feel unconfined. The rest of the yard now felt like it was a whole instead of pieced together. The team created a built-in grill and installed new granite steps as new access to the patio. The patio has a curvilinear shape, bringing a softness to the yard.

The main circle of the patio helps to welcome the rest of the yard. It provides a great place to sit in comfortable chairs. The smaller circle provides an area for a sleek fire bowl space. The patio was constructed of a full-color thermal patterned bluestone with a 10” inlay of blue mist granite.
An irregular natural fieldstone slab was also installed as a step-up out of the patio space to the side yard. Boulders were also included for interest within the plant beds, anchoring the design. The design features pink and White Knock out Roses, Sky Pencil Holly, Butterfly bush, and Ornamental grass. We also included Hydrangeas Hidecote Lavender, Little Princess Spirea, and Bloomerang lilacs. This gives the design a consistent seasonal bloom and interest.

The front yard space was in need of some curb appeal. So we installed a new planting in harmony with some of the larger existing plants. We added contrast to the existing maroon color of the Japanese Thread Leaf Maple and paired it with Japanese Forest Grass and Mops Chamaecyparis. We also played with the color by adding red astilbe and Endless Summer Blue Hydrangea to pull in the blue color of the front door. Limelight hydrangeas and Nikko Deutzia align the existing front walk. While a Russian Cypress softens the understory of the existing weeping cherry. Variegated Liriope help to brighten the dark corner under the existing Redbud.
